Design Tip Tuesday - Working With an Interior Designer

Updated: Sep 28, 2022

As designers, it is our job to help you create a home that fits your personality, values, and lifestyle. However, if you haven't worked with a designer before, you may find yourself wondering how to make the most out of the experience and what you can do as a client to prepare. In addition to considering the basics such as scope of the project (what space is being designed and to what extent?) and your budget, collecting inspiration and considering your functional needs helps equip your designer with all the information to tailor your design to you as an individual.

COLLECT YOUR INSPIRATION

While interviewing designers to find the best fit for your project, you will be asked what style you tend to lean towards. Often, clients will have an idea of whether they lean more traditional or modern, but getting more specific can quickly leave you feeling unsure. However, with tools such as Pinterest and Houzz you don't have to be an expert in different styles of design (after all - that's our job!) to show your designer what you love. We suggest you spend some time collecting images of spaces that bring you joy and make a note of what about that space draws you to the image.

CONSIDER YOUR FUNCTIONAL NEEDS

In addition to your inspiration, take some time to consider your day to day functional needs. What could your space do to support your routine that it doesn't currently do? What activities do you and your family enjoy together? Do you need extra counter space for home cooked meals or a place to spread out with a puzzle?
